Quaker

I like Quaker designs. They look so elegant in spite of their relative simplicity. This particular chart is by Nathalie Cichon of Jardin Privé. It's a pity the light in the photo alters the colors a bit, because the palette is really lovely. It's a small design and - can you guess? - I finally decided to turn it into a sort of notions booklet. I found some really beautiful fabric for the backing so I thought it would be worth creating something where both front and back could be enjoyed. Hence the booklet form.

Mi piacciono molto i disegni Quaker. Sono così eleganti nella loro apparente semplicità. Questo schema in particolare è di Nathalie Cichon di Jardin Privé. E' un peccato che la luce nella foto non sia ideale e alteri un po' i colori. La palette scelta dall'autrice è davvero deliziosa. E' un disegno piccolo per cui - indovinate un po'? - ne ho fatto un libriccino porta oggetti per cucito. La stoffa per il retro era troppo bella per non usarla per qualcosa in cui potesse essere visibile. Di qui il libriccino.

The booklet opens in three parts. To the left I placed a linen ribbon that can hold cotton bobbins. In the center, there is a ruler (which I recently found out is very useful) and a scrap of felt for needles and pins, plus a lace, a good place for buttons :)

Il libriccino si apre in tre parti. Sul lato sinistro ho cucito del nastro di lino, in modo da poterci infilare dei rocchetti di filo. Al centro, un righello (che ho scoperto è sempre utilissimo), un po' di feltro per aghi e spilli, e del pizzo, che è sempre un posto carino su cui cucire dei bottoni :)

Lastly, on the right section I placed a tiny felt pocket for scissors, a mini hook or whatever is needed. The back of course shows the lovely fabric I mentioned before and a large wooden button to keep everything safely in place. 

Infine, sulla parte di destra ho inserito una piccola tasca in feltro per le forbici, un minuscolo telaio o altre cose che possono servire. E naturalmente sul retro si vede la stoffina di cui parlavo prima. Per chiudere bene il tutto ho usato un bel bottone in legno.

The front part shows the complete Quaker design. A sweet chart, very very enjoyable. The only slightly negative part of this project - my fault - was the fabric I chose for the stitched part. I wished to try a fabric called Lucan, which is a mix of linen and cotton by Zweigart, and this seemed a nice project for it. Lucan is a bit stiffer than linen, which is what I wanted but I did not enjoy stitching on it. It has an irregular threads structure that resembles linen but it's not as pleasant to the touch. I usually find irregularities a great merit of linen but in this particular case I found them more of a nuisance. But maybe it's just me. Apart from that, stitching stands out really well on this Lucan fabric so I would not entirely rule it out.

Sul davanti ecco il disegno Quaker completo: uno schema davvero dolcissimo e molto molto bello da ricamare. L'unico difetto di questo progetto - colpa mia - è stata la stoffa che ho scelto per il ricamo. Volevo provare questa stoffa chiamata Lucan, che è un misto di cotone e lino prodotto da Zweigart. Questo mi sembrava il progetto adatto perchè la Lucan è un po' più rigida del lino. Confesso però che non l'ho trovata affatto piacevole da lavorare. Come nel lino la trama è irregolare ma mentre nel lino ho sempre trovato che l'irregolarità fosse un pregio, qui non è la stessa cosa. Forse sono io, e a parte questo, il ricamo risalta molto bene su questa stoffa quindi non è del tutto da scartare.
